We have performed several experiments.... and one that you might try yourself. We are selling handbags, and we were not doing very well at first. So we marked our items up a little bit and then tried a big sale. At first we had a 50% off sale and we noticed that several people could not figure how much of a discount that 50% of would be (I know... very sad). So we changed the signs from 50% off so that they read Half Price Sale. It has been amazing to us that not many people could figure out 50%, but they could immediately figure what half price would be.
